School Outreach Service
TRAINING COURSES 2008

The School Outreach Service is a multi-disciplinary team which works within an inclusive model of service provision for mainstream school aged children with an autism spectrum disorder.

Parents and carers, teachers, special support personnel and other professionals will all benefit from attending the SOS courses which offer practical, evidence-based interventions and opportunities for problem-solving and discussion. Courses are presented by members of the SOS and BIS teams.

Courses

Asperger’s Disorder and Adolescence
Learn about:

The normal development issues of adolescence

Specific challenges of adolescence faced by young people with HFA/Asperger’s disorder

Challenges faced by adolescents with HFA/Asperger’s disorder in mainstream high schools

Effective planning for transition from primary school to high school

Problems presented by the curriculum, teaching styles and school procedures

Difficulties forming friendships and coping with a variety of relationships including peers, teachers and parents

Anxiety and its management

Sexuality issues

Strategies for modifying learning and social environments

Cost: $165 incl GST
Morning tea and lunch provided

Introduction to ASD and Mainstream School Strategies
Learn about:

Overview of high functioning autism (HFA)/Asperger’s disorder

Learning styles of children with HFA/Asperger’s disorder

Strategies for supporting social communication, behavioural and learning needs in classroom and playground settings

Cost: $165 incl GST
Morning tea and lunch provided
